Career Services Consultant

HOW DID YOU GET HERE?

Like many people, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do when I was in college. After a less than fulfilling internship while studying at Michigan State University I decided that my current career path wasn't a good fit. What I did know was that I liked working in higher education and so I stayed on as a religious advisor for two years after graduation. Following that I spent two years abroad in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (also working in higher education) before finally coming back to the states to get my master's and pursue a career in student affairs.

Initially I began my career in academic advising at Purdue, but I knew that my passion was for career services. At many points in my life, I would have benefited tremendously from talking with a career professional, and that led me to ecplore the field as much as I could. During a professional development for career coaching for academic advisors I met Kaletra who worked at the CCO. We chatted and I asked to sit down and ask some questions (an informational interview) about career advising. Seeing my interest, Kaletra invited me to apply for a career consultant position that just opened. I applied, and after several interviews was offered the job! Since the, I've grown to love my job more and more as I help students learn valuable skills, navigate decision making, and grow both personally and professionally.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING AT THE CCO?

My co-workers. They make the CCO the fun, supportive, and welcoming place that it is.

WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL JOB YOU HAVE EVER HAD?

While in Dubai, one of my jobs was picking up visiting professors from Dubai International Airport and acting as a tour guide.

ADVICE FOR STUDENTS:

Time-sensitive decisions can be very overwheling and can create a lot of anxiety. Don't be afraid to ask for help to find people to talk about it with. Also, remember that every decision is an opportunity for professional development and preparation for the next big thing.
